These are links and descriptions of competitions that I am encouraging the Magis students to join. They should share their work as well so that they can receive feedback before sending their work off for competition.
FOYLE YOUNG POETS 2013

On Monday the 11th March 2013 the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award opened for entries. The prize is for young writers from across the world who have until the 31st of July 2013 to enter. Last year's competition attracted entries from a staggering 7,351 young people from 60 countries worldwide, making it one of the largest literary competitions in the world.

We are delighted to announce that this year's competition will have acclaimed judges Hannah Lowe and David Morley at the helm. It is once again on the search for exciting new young poets aged 11-17. So what are you waiting for, take the chance and enter your poem!
With entries from over 7,300 young people last year from a staggering 60 countries worldwide, it is one of the largest literary competitions in the world and its importance is widely attested. Each year 100 winners (85 Commendations and 15 Overall Winners) are selected by a team of high profile judges, and receive their awards at an annual prize-giving event on National Poetry Day on the 3rd October 2013. Thanks to funding from the Foyle Foundation the competition remains completely free to enter and we are able to offer a wide range of prizes, opportunities and resources to young people and schools across the UK. We are delighted to launch new Foyle Lesson Plans based on previous winning poems - a fantastic way to inspire new voices.
Overall Winners from the 15 to 17 age category attend a week-long intensive residential Arvon course where they develop their creative writing skills alongside fellow poets. Winners aged 11-14 group benefit from poetry residencies at their school followed by distance mentoring.
HOW TO ENTER:
The competition is free to enter. Individuals may enter more than one poem, however we strongly advise that you concentrate on drafting and redrafting your poems and send only a small selection of your very best (we suggest no more than 6-8 maximum). Remember, quality is more important than quantity! Please read the full rules carefully.
RULES:
You must be aged 11-17 on the closing date of the 31st July 2013 (i.e. Under 18 years old) in order to enter. The competition closes at midnight on the 31st July 2013.
FYP is about what you want to write. So you can enter poems written in class, or poems you've written at home, from exercises or from your own imaginings. The competition is free to enter and poems can be of any length and on any theme. Individuals may enter more than one poem, however we strongly advise that you concentrate on drafting and redrafting your poems and send only a selection (we suggest no more than 6-8 absolute maximum) of your very best. Remember, quality is more important than quantity!

Please take a moment to read the full rules carefully:
- Each poem must be the original work of the author, and must not have been previously published (online on any website, blog or on social media i.e. Twitter or Facebook), broadcast on TV or radio or have won another competition.
- Entrants must be aged 11-17 on the closing date of the 31st July 2013.
- Poems must be in English and can be entered by anyone aged 11-17 from anywhere in the world (however please note that we are unable to cover the travel fees for any Winners invited to the Arvon Course).
- Competition entries cannot be returned under any circumstances so please make sure you make take note of all poems entered and send copies only.
- Please note that entries sent in by e-mail (as attachement or written in the body of email) will not be accepted under any circumstances. If you would like to enter online only entries through the formal online form at foyleyoungpoets.org/2013 will be accepted.
- Due to the large number of entrants we are unable to respond individually to submissions.
- No acknowledgment of receipt can be made for postal entries unless a stamped, self-addressed envelope is included with the entry. Please ensure the correct postage is used as late entries cannot be accepted.
- All online entries will receive an email notification of receipt if a correct email address is provided.
- The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning this decision.
- All online entries must be received by midnight GMT on the 31st July 2013. Late entries will not be accepted under any circumstances.
- All postal entries must be post dated on or before the 31st July 2013.
- Winning poets will be notified directly between the 13th and 20th September 2013.
- Due to the sheer volume of entries, only successful entrants will not notified. Details of the full winners list will be announced publicly on the website on the 3rd October 2013.
- The copyright of each poem remains with the author. Authors of the winning poems will grant the Poetry Society permission to publish or broadcast the poems.
- All 100 winners will be invited to attend an awards ceremony on National Poetry Day, the 3rd October 2013, in London.
There are 15 Overall Winners and 85 Commended Poets.
- The 15 Overall Winners aged 11-17 will have their poems printed in the winners' anthology and all Commended Poets will have their name published inside - 20,000+ of these are sent out across the UK and beyond.
- 15-17 year olds in the Overall Winners category will attend a week-long residential course at one of the prestigious Arvon Centres - take a look at a previous course here
- 11-14 year olds in the Overall Winners category will win a short residency in their school by a leading poet followed by distance mentoring
- All 100 winners (Overall and Commended) receive a year's Youth Membership and the opportunity to contribute to our online YM magazine and our new digital platform Young Poets Network
- All 100 winners (Overall and Commended) will be invited to a prestigious Awards Ceremony in London on National Poetry Day (October)
- All 100 winners (Overall and Commended) will receive prizes including books published by Faber & Faber, Bloodaxe Books, Picador, Walker Books, Puffin, Seren, and tall-lighthouse
- Extra goodies to be supplied courtesey of Divine Chocolate
- Each Winner receives a beautiful Paperblanks notebook for their future scribblings
- The 6 schools who inspire the most entries will receive a special selection of books from Faber & Faber, Bloodaxe Books tall-lighthouse, Seren Books, Puffin and Picador for their libraries
- Each year we award we select a small group of new Teacher Trailblazers who have demonstrated outstanding innovation and commitment to inspiring young people to write poetry who will be invited to and celebrated at the award ceremony in London on National Poetry Day (October)
- Schools who have demonstrated the most dedication and enthusiasm for the Award are rewarded with free poet -in-school residencies and library sets of poetry books to inspire future generations.

RULES OF THE 2013 YOUNG WRITERS OF EARTH FLASH FICTION WRITING COMPETITION
1) There shall be a maximum of two entries per participant. Participants who are submitting two entries must include both entries in one email.
2) All entries shall be sent to [email protected] with the subject head “FLASH FICTION ENTRY.”
3) The document must either be (1) contained in the body of the email or (2) attached and saved in a doc. or docx. format. Entries saved in other formats (e.g. rtf, pdf, etc.) shall automatically be disqualified.
4) The participant shall disclose his/her name, age, and country either in the body of the email or in the attached file. No disqualifications with regard to location.
5) No minimum number of words required but shall not be more than 1000. Entries with more than 1000 words shall automatically be disqualified.
6) The entry shall be written in the English language.
7) There is no prescribed theme or genre. However, materials with radically foul language shall not be considered.
8) All participants must have a valid e-mail address. Only one email address shall be used for the competition. It will be the only means we will contact the participants. If the participant’s entry wins, and for any reason he/she fails to respond to our notification within ONE WEEK after notice, we shall have the discretion to pick another winner or retain the original winning participant with forfeiture of cash prize.
9) Submission of entries shall mean giving us the right to publish the same on our website in case they shall be shortlisted.
10) Once the entry is submitted, no revisions shall be allowed. However, the participant shall have the right to withdraw his/her entry any time BEFORE it shall have been shortlisted. The participant agrees that once his/her entry is on the shortlist, no withdrawal may be allowed.
11) Previously published materials may be submitted as long as the participants own them/retain copyrights over them.
12) A shortlist of the poems, to be determined by the Young Writers of Earth’s editors, will ALL be featured on Young Writers of Earth’s website and annual anthology. They will all be considered runners-up.
13) Only the shortlist of entries, in anonymous versions, will be forwarded to published author Valerie Byron – the main judge of the competition.
14) The judge’s decision is final.
15) Participants may start submitting their entries starting April 4, 2013. The deadline of submissions is yet to be finalized. However, we reserve the right to close or cancel the writing competition at any time at our discretion.
16) Young Writers of Earth shall not be responsible for the failure of the participant to read and understand these rules.

My Favorite Book contest

National Book Store, The Philippine STAR and Globe are now receiving entries for 2013’s essay writing contest in the Sunday Lifestyle section.
My Favorite Book contest invites readers to write about their favorite book/s or author/s and why they have touched their lives. Books can be fiction or nonfiction. Make us laugh, make us cry, or just touch us, as your favorite books have touched you.
Submit a printout of your unpublished essay, typed, double-spaced and not more than five pages long (1,100 words) and a CD containing the word file. Write your name, age, address, contact numbers and two paragraphs of background information. Also include a print of a passport-sized photo or in jpeg format (not inserted in a document file). Mark your CD and picture as we get many entries. Writers who do not comply with these rules will not have their entries considered.
Weekly prize is P5,000 worth of gift certificates from National Book Store. The grand prizes are P50,000 for the first prize, P30,000 for second prize and P20,000 for third prize (all prizes will be distributed in 50-percent cash and 50-percent gift certificates). Five honorable mention winners will receive P10,000 each — P5,000 worth of GCs from NBS, plus P5,000 cash from The Philippine STAR. Globe will also be giving away Globe Handyphones to the eight grand-prize winners.
Anyone can join except employees of NBS, STAR and Globe and their advertising and PR agencies.
