Fourth Composition: Shelfilipino
If a "selfie" is a picture that you take of yourself, and a "shelfie" is a picture you take of yourself and of your shelf of books, then a "shelFilipino" is a picture you take of yourself and of your shelf of Filipino books.

The Filipiniana books I have at home are Mutya, Ibong Adarna and Tall Story. I have read all 3 of these books. All 3 of them were required for school. I most probably have not have even considered reading them if they were not required. I am not really interested in Filipiniana books but I might read a few if they are nice, possibly history books. I like the Tall Story book because it told me how it would be to have a multicultural country. I liked Mutya as it was a very interesting and realistic story. I also liked Ibong Adarna because it had a very nice way of being read, in song. I have learned now that I should read more filipiniana books. I learned that as I have noticed that I have not read any Filipiniana books that were not required to be read.

JV Tuzon A lot of my filipiniana books are about religion. Some are storybooks about saints and others are about spiritual inspirations. I read most of my books especially the one made by a friend of my parents. The book " Ibong Adarna " is required to be read. I would also have read this even if the book was not required because I know content is very interesting. I like my books because I discover that a lot of Filipinos are talented in writing. The books also promote how to learn to love and cherish our national language and writers. These books have a lot of inspirational stories that I think can guide me as I grow up. These books have taught me to be an inspiration to others and continue to strive hard even though there are a lot of challenges in life. I intend to read the " Ibong Adarna " and I look forward to reading it because it will develop my vocabulary skills.

These are my Filipino books, 6 of them to be exact. All of these are storybooks and I have read them all already. As you can see, the 3 books at the bottom are required at school and these books are: Munting Bayani, Tall Story, and Mutya. I might read them even if they are not required sometime in the future, especially Tall Story. I am looking for books that shows some adventure like going to another country/province. I also want to find books with moral lessons and parts that are pretty tragic. What I like about these books is that they show how Filipinos are capable of telling good stories. They also show that Filipino stories do not have to adapt foreign culture to make a decent story. I most likely read Tall Story because of how much appealing the story especially the pain one of the two protagonist was going through. I also like how they adapt a Montalban legend.

Shelfilipino Reflection
i) The Filipiniana books in my home are books that are history books, fantasy books and books made by Philippine heroes. I already have read most of these books such as “Ang Lihim ng San Esteban” and my A.P. books, but I still look forward to reading the “Noli Me Tangere” and “Ibong Adarna.”
ii) The required books in my collection are my A.P. books and some other books for the Filipino subject like the “Ibong Adarna.” If I weren’t required to read these books, I would still read them, because I always want to more about Filipinos and some old legends.
iii) I would like to read Filipiniana books with a lot of action and supernatural characters like the “tikbalang” and “kapre.” I would also like to read books with more conflicts, because I like to know how the characters will be able to come up with a solution with the problems.
iv) What I like about my books is that I learned more of Philippine’s old history, culture, traditions, superstitions and legends. These books increase my knowledge of my own country and I am proud of this.
v) The Filipiniana book that I look forward to read is the “Noli Me Tangere.” This is because it catches my attention due to the fact that it is very famous and that it is made by Jose Rizal himself, a Philippine hero.

I own multiple kinds of Filipinania books. I have classic books such as Noli me Tangere, Ibong Adarna, Kudaman and El Filibusterismo. I also own modern ones such as Mutya , Without Seeing the Dawn, Tall Story and Ang Munting Bayani. I also own reference books such as Buglaw, Pluma 6 (sister's book), and Araling Panlipunan 4 and 6. Some of the books I own like Mutya, Tall Story, Munting Bayani, Buglaw and Araling Panlipunan 4 and 6 were required to be read . If it were not required to be read, I would still read them anyways.

I have many kinds of Filipino books at home. The books in my home have many genres such as comedy, adventure, and slice of life. I have read many Filipino books like Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang, Aklat Adarna and many more. The books I had to read for school are Mutya, Ang Munting Bayani, and Lihim ni San Esteban.I think I would still read Lihim ni San Esteban even if it was not required because of its beautiful cover art. What I look for in a Filipiniana book are the following: orignality, creativity, good storytelling, and a gripping plot. I like the fact that the books I own all have beautiful art, moral lessons worth learning, and Filipino humor. All the books I have are very funny to a Filipino, but Foreigners won't get the jokes and references. I plan on reading ABNKKBSNPLaKo? by Bob Ong because from what I've heard from others is that it is a very funny book about the author's life in school. I was interested in it because I enjoy comedy, and because the plot seems very interesting to me.

I have short novels, comics and a book of poems at home. Some of these books are Christmas gifts, the comics are from the Black Ink stand in school and the short novels are from this year and previous years at the Ateneo. I have to read "Lihim ng San Esteban" and "Ibong Adarna" for this school year. I also had to read “Mutya” for grade 6 and “ Ang Munting Bayani for grade 4. I honestly might not have read these books if not for school. Whenever I buy a Filipiniana book, I always look for a nice plot. If the plot of the book is bad, then I would just stop halfway into the book. So far, most of the Filipiniana books I have have nice plots, so I like them. I intend to read this book I saw called "Voiceless". The Synopsis on the back intrigued me so I might buy this book and read it.

I have a variety of Filipino books at home. These include legends, lessons for school, and stories set in the time of the Spanish. I have read most of these, though I have not read the books written by our national hero, Jose Rizal. Most of my Filipino books are not required by school to read, but I made an effort to read them anyway because I thought that maybe there were Filipino books out there that were as good as foreign ones. It turns out that I was right, and my first impression of a Filipino book being boring was wrong and that there are some of these books out there that are intriguing and fun to read. Now, I read Filipino books even if I am not required to do so. What I look for in Filipino books are legends, stories about the war, or something completely different from ordinary books. What I like about the ones I own, is that they are very rarely found in bookstores because of their old age. This year, I want to read the book “El Filibusterimo” because even though it is quite boring, it shows us the hard life of the Filipinos back when the Spaniards ruled the Philippines. Finally, it also shows us how lucky we are that there were brave Filipinos who were willing to die for our freedom, or else we might be still under the Spanish reign like them.

Most of the Filipiniana books that I have are related to Philippine History . Some of them are old textbooks from school . While some are original Filipino stories . All textbooks from AP and Filipino were required by Ateneo . Some are old novels that my sister was required to read like : Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal . I usually like Filipiniana books that have something to do with History from Magellan to People Power One. Since most of our books our about Philippine History, I used the books to help me last year for my AP subject which is why I like them . I look forward to read the book Ibon g Adarna because I am interested in the story and what it is all about.

I have many kinds of Filipino books that have moral lessons; most of them are stories on legends and folklores. I have read almost all of my Filipino books but I have forgotten some of the stories in the past. While I was looking for my old books I was interested to read some of the books again that I had and might have read but forgotten them.
I have forgotten most of the books I was required to read but the ones I remember are Tall Story by Candy Gourlay and Mutya. I would read these books even if they weren’t required to but I think that for the school to show these books and recognize them to us would be a good thing. I think that as a Filipino we have a lot of culture and folktales about monsters and heroes in adventure. I think that those kinds of books will sell really well and interest other and me people. The moral lessons of the books I have are not to do drugs, not drinking alcohol, not smoking and gambling. There are some other books that have compassion, bravery, friendship, selfless acts and love as the main idea in the story. I would like to read a book called Trese because Mr.Falgui recommended this book and he said that this book has a lot of adventure just like the thing I would like to see in a Filipiniana book.

Well, my family has self-help books, comedy, history, and prayer books. I may have a lot more books but I couldn’t seem to find them. I have only read “Jokes for Every one” actually. I am currently reading “Ibong Adarna” and “Lupang Hinirang”. The books which were required by the school are “Ibong Adarna”and “Lupang Hinirang" which I have already started reading. I still have some books in school which are filipiniana books and are required by the school namely “Ang lihim ng San Pedro”. I would still read them because I would really want to broaden my knowledge and at the same time not waste time just using gadgets. I am looking for suspense in books and also a bit of action in it. All my Filipiniana books are all perfect for my age, (except “Raising Pinoy Boys”; that is my auntie’s) because I can relate to the books I have. I intend to read “Filipino Heroes League” because I can see how the author “illustrates” his words through pictures and it gives life to the whole book.
Books:(L-R) Lupang hinirang, Ibong adarna, Raising Pinoy Boys, Didache, Joke For Everyone

Most of my Filipiniana books are legends about animals, fruits and people and the rest of my books are stories with morale lessons you can learn from and apply in life. I have read all my Filipiniana books due to curiosity and interest in finding what will happen to the characters in the story. None of the books that I read were required by school and even if I was not required to read them, I would have still read them ,because I love reading BOOKS!!!!! I look for action and adventure inFilipiniana books ,because I like books that are very exciting. I also look for a little fantasy in these books to make it more extraordinary. I like the lessons you can learn in my books ,because it can help you in solving your own daily problems in life. Reading Filipiniana books is not only fun and exciting ,hence reading stories like these can also strengthen your Filipino language more. It can also let you learn new Filipino words that you can add in your vocabulary. In my opinion, these books are special and helpful ,because you cannot predict most of the endings of these kinds of books ,and you can learn a lot from books like these. I intend to read more action and adventure books ,because ( as I mentioned before )
I like exciting books ,and...... I LOVE READING!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I first did the Shelfilipino homework, I thought that I had only a few Filipino books. It turned out that I had a lot. A lot of them were from my childhood and I must have forgotten about these. It's a shame though, since these books helped me define who I am. A big majority of the books are very short, and I assumed that it was because Filipinos don't really write long books. But after realizing that they were from my childhood, it finally hit me that I was only around five years old when I got them. All I read at that time were short books. After all this, I saw how long ago the last time I got and read a Filipino book. It's pretty shameful of myself to have not read one for a long time, but I do have a reason. There aren't that many Filipino books I've heard of. A lot of my Filipino books were gifts from other people, books I've found in stores and books Ateneo gave me. Rarely, I hear someone talk about books outside of school. Much less Filipino books. Filipino books are not famous. They're not that popular. As a Filipino, I should help Filipino books become popular. To do this, I have to start reading them once again. I have to keep enjoying them, and recommend the ones I really enjoy to others. This way, I can be a better Filipino.

Reflection:
The kinds of Filipiniana books I have read are novels, short stories, dictionaries, textbooks, and handbooks. These books are the following: Alamat ng Pating,Painless Math,Noong Unang Panahon,Bahay Buhay,Ang Hukuman ni Sinukuan,Ang Kamatis ni Peles,The Mouse and the Lion,The Ant and the Grasshopper,Birdflight,Ateneo Student Handbook, MSA Math Competiton Book 1,Ventures,Inspira Series Math 7,Bagong Diksyunaryong Pilipino~Pilipino,Pilipinas Kong Mahal Grade 3,Lupang Hinirang,Tall Story,Pilipinas Kong Mahal Grade 6,and Meeting Jesus in the Gospels 4.I am finished with all these books except Lupang Hinirang. The books I read just because they were requirements for school were Filemon Mamon,Ateneo Student Handbook,Pilipinas Kong Mahal Grade 3,Pilipinas Kong Mahal Grade 6,Tall Story,Meeting Jesus in Gospels, and I am currently reading Lupang Hinirang because my teacher told me to do so.I like reading Filipino books which are fun and exciting. What I mean by these adjectives are books filled with adventures and twists.I don’t like reading History books since they usually bore me.What I like about my Filipiniana books is that they take you on an imaginary adventure in their stories. They are like an escape from problems and they make you feel better.I would like to read “Shine” by Candy Gourlay because when I read Tall Story, one of her books,I was stunned by her writing skills.I hope to read more of her books and wish that these books are also nice.

I own many different kinds of Filipiniana books; however, the most common books in my collection are story books. Following the storybooks are my textbooks. Those which I have read, that are required for school, are "Tall Story", "Mutya", and some other books that would help in AP Class. Most likely, I would have read them if I was bored, or if I was just curious. I would like to read a Filipiniana book with a good story, but I may also want to learn some facts from them too. By facts, I mean that I read them for what I call "My Random Knowledge." What I really like about Filipiana books is how interesting and exciting they can get. Usually, this excitement satisfies my hunger for action and/or adventure. I would like to read more stories. At the same time, I would keep on learning more facts, and of course, reading more textbooks to keep my grades up. All this reading, with Filipiniana books or not, will always keep my personality and relationship with literary of different kinds.

I mostly have text books and story books as Filipiniana books which (quite rarely) I read at home. Not that I don't enjoy reading books, it's just that I can't find the time to enjoy reading them. I have read a total of about a hundred Filipiniana books in total (no kidding). It would be either the textbooks which I read about history and our heroes), or storybooks ( where I read thrilling tales about Philippine folklore). There were books required to be read by the school such as some about Andres Bonifacio's life when I was the representative of Ateneo in an inter-school essay writing competition last year. There was one especially thick book which I honestly didn't read for days for I was overwhelmed by the amount of pages it contained, then again, there were other books such as (Andres Bonifacio: Buhay ng isang Bayani), that had fewer pages which naturally brought a sense of relief to me. I have also read some Filipiniana pocket-books such as Mutya, Tall Story, and Ibong Adarna which we were required to read. I still would have read these books with such enthusiasm for I love reading, no matter what the topic of the book may be. What I look for in a good Filipiniana text book is valid and accurate information on historical events ( Labanan sa Mactan, Sigaw Ng Pugad Lawin, Ang Pagmamartir ng GomBurZa, etc.) and important people who served as heroes in shaping the course of Philippine history (Jose Rizal, Manuel L.Quezon, Lapu-Lapu, etc.). For story books, I would prefer one with a tale that has you hooked on reading and even wanting to finish the book. I wouldn't really care whether the story book was based on true events or not, but as long as it had a good story line, the events flow as one idea, and (quite strangely for me), a tale that touches your heart. I absolutely love everything about the Filipiniana books I own since they do indeed contain relevant and accurate information, some interesting facts and stories that I never knew about, as well as heart-stopping, touching and compassionate stories. Now I haven't exactly decided which ones I want to read, but there must be other Filipiniana books out there that must be interesting and waiting for me to read them.
